Mykita Glasses Spotted In The New Movie “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”

December 29th, 2011

Actor Daniel Craig is seen wearing MYKITA’s “Helmut” glasses during his role as Mikael Blomkvist in the new David Fincher film “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (original title in Swedish: Män som hatar kvinnor – “Men Who Hate Women”) is an award-winning crime novel by Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson. It is the first book in the trilogy known as the “Millennium Series”.

At his death in November 2004, Larsson left the three unpublished novels that make up the trilogy. They became posthumous best-sellers in several European countries as well as in the United States. Larsson witnessed the gang rape of a young girl when he was 15. He never forgave himself for failing to help the girl, whose name was Lisbeth – like the young heroine of his books, herself a rape victim, which inspired the theme of sexual violence against women in his books.

About MYKITA
MYKITA’s in-house workshop in Berlin has been supplying hand-assembled eyewear for the high-end segment since 2003. The creative core behind the brand are its four founders Moritz Krueger, Philipp Haffmans, Daniel Haffmans and Harald Gottschling.

Collaborative ventures with avant-garde designers such as Bernhard Willhelm or Alexandre Herchcovitch have seen MYKITA appearing on international catwalks and become an established feature of the fashion world.

A clear design signature coupled with excellent product quality and a huge potential for innovation have helped make MYKITA a major name on the international eyewear market.

21st U.S. Optometry School To Open In Massachusetts

December 26th, 2011

The Doctor of Optometry program at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) has been granted “Preliminary Approval” by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE). Scheduled to begin in August 2012, with 64 students at each level, it will be the 21st school of optometry in the U.S.

The official letter from the ACOE stated that the program “has clearly demonstrated it is developing in accordance with Council standards. The program has approval to begin student recruitment, selection and admissions, and to begin offering the program.”

The accreditation effort was led by founding dean of the school, Lesley Walls, OD, and vice dean, Kent Daum, OD. Most recently, Walls served as president of the Southern California College of Optometry, and he was also the dean of optometry at Pacific University in Oregon and at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. Daum served as vice president and dean of academic affairs at the Illinois College of Optometry.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the entire profession of optometry because our optometry students will be educated and trained side-by-side in a multiple disciplinary setting along with students in physical therapy, pharmacy and physician assistant programs,” said Walls.

The school will be located at Worcester’s Lincoln Square Living and Learning Center, which the College purchased in 2010 and currently houses 200 students. Construction on the six-story, 54,000-square-foot building where the School of Optometry will be located is well underway. It will include an on-site optometry clinic, research space, administrative offices, faculty/staff offices, and an optical dispensary. The College received permission from the Worcester Planning Board to move forward with the $10 million project in September.

Founded in 1823, MCPHS is the oldest institution of higher education in the entire city of Boston and the second oldest college of pharmacy in the U.S. “This setting will help to ensure that future ODs are recognized as an integral part of the entire health care team,” added Walls.

Protein In Fruit Fly Eye May Shed Light On Blinding Diseases

December 23rd, 2011

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and collaborators have discovered a powerful new protein in the eye of the fruit fly that may shed light on blinding diseases and other sensory problems in humans. Reporting in the Nov. 16, 2011, issue of Neuron, the scientists note that similar but yet-to-be-identified proteins in the eye and brain could help explain age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa, as well as Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and prion diseases.

The protein, which the scientists have named XPORT, serves as a molecular chaperone for two important proteins that are key to sensory activities in the eye. One protein, rhodopsin, is responsible for absorbing light, and the other protein, TRP, is a channel that plays a role in calcium influx into cells. XPORT guides the two proteins from the place where they are made in the cell to the location where they do their jobs.

Dr. Nansi Jo Colley

This intricate process of chaperoning includes synthesis, folding, assembly, quality control, transport and targeting of proteins to their appropriate locations, explains senior author Dr. Nansi Jo Colley of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. The complex process is prone to error, and a malfunction in any of the steps can have dire consequences in tissues. Colley and her team discovered XPORT as a result of screening a collection of 900 fruit-fly mutants that undergo retinal degeneration. The XPORT mutant displayed retinal degeneration and defects in rhodopsin and TRP.

In their experiments, the scientists showed that XPORT forms a complex with rhodopsin and TRP, and is required to successfully transport the two proteins to a specific location on the cell surface. They also determined that XPORT is essential for cell survival-mutations in XPORT prevented the two proteins from moving through the trafficking pathway, and this ended in retinal degeneration and blindness in the fly. XPORT was also found to interact closely with another family of molecular chaperones called heat shock proteins, which are indispensable in the folding of newly synthesized proteins. While XPORT is an eye-specific protein that is expressed in flies and other insects, Colley expects that a protein very similar to XPORT exists in humans.

TD Tom Davies Bespoke Eyewear Launches In Malaysia

December 22nd, 2011

Optometry specialists, Eyecon Optometry Network (Eyecon), has launched TD Tom Davies Bespoke, the world’s first luxury made-to-measure eyewear service in Malaysia. Malaysia is also the first country in Asia to launch this exciting bespoke service following the appointment of Eyecon as the sole distributor by the award-winning British luxury eyewear brand.

TD Tom Davies, helmed by British spectacle designer Tom Davies, has revolutionised eyewear by introducing bespoke frames that are designed and hand-made to suit a person’s face, skin tone, physical characteristics and lifestyle.

Having a frame designed and made for you is like a combination of ordering a bespoke suit and re-designing your own face. You get spectacles or sunglasses that fit perfectly, in exactly the colours and materials you choose, and designed specifically around your natural features.

According to Eyecon Chief Executive Officer, Murphy Chan, while consumers could spend thousands of ringgit on designing and tailoring their wardrobe, there was simply no option for personalisation when it came to spectacles or sunglasses until TD Tom Davies came long.

“For many, glasses are the defining features of their faces and something they will wear every day for years on end. Eyecon is proud to introduce TD Tom Davies Bespoke frames to discerning Malaysians. They are made for spectacle wearers who want the perfect fit and trendsetters who are seeking their signature style,” he said.

During the consultation, the customer chooses his or her preferred frame. The optometrist then takes a sophisticated series of measurements and photographs, chooses colours, shapes and materials and input them into the online design wizard.

TD Tom Davies designers in London will then provide a portfolio of three designs which gives a realistic idea of what the frames look like on the customer’s face.

Once the option is chosen, the frame is hand-made using a combination of traditional techniques and modern machinery. One of the features most liked by TD Tom Davies customers is having their names laser-engraved discreetly on the inside of one of the arms as the finishing touch.

Typically, the entire process, from consultation to delivery, takes about three weeks.

TD Tom Davies Bespoke was launched in conjunction with the official opening of Eyecon’s flagship outlet at The Gardens, Mid Valley City. The outlet, one of the 12 Eyecon Optometry Centres nationwide, promises a new experience in eye care.

Instead of opticians, every Eyecon Optometry Centre is managed by optometrists who are trained to detect eye disease or evidence of systemic abnormalities. Optometrists are also able to provide more comprehensive eye care and advice to the public.

Eyecon Optometry Centres also use state-of-the-art equipment and machines that are able to offer a comprehensive analysis of the health of your eyes. In addition to the usual range of products, they also offer customised solutions for frames and lenses.

According to Chan, Eyecon aimed to provide a totally new eye care experience to the public as the “trusted eye care advisor”.

“We currently have 12 centres nationwide and aim to increase the number through our franchise programme. Our vision is to become a world-class optometry network that is able to deliver professional and holistic eye care services and innovative solutions that enhance and enrich lives,” he said.

Since the network’s formation in 2010, Eyecon has been providing vision testing and free eyewear to underprivileged children through its Penglihatan Jelas, Prestasi Cemerlang (PJPC) Corporate Responsibility campaign.

In conjunction with the launch of TD Tom Davies Bespoke, Eyecon announced that it will be sponsoring eyewear and eye care for one underprivileged child with every purchase from the range.

Mixed Materials and Textures—New From ProDesign: Zense 7901-06

December 20th, 2011

The designer‘s love for aluminum materials and colors inspired this lively collection, that combines acetate, titanium and aluminum. The beautiful colors they have achieved with the aluminum fronts, really makes these frames stand out.

The bold block hinge creates the perfect connection between the fronts and the acetate temples without disrupting the flow of the matching colors. The different textures of the aluminum and the acetate brings a certain dynamic to these Zense frames. On the temples, the colors are strongest on the inside, with just a drop on the outside, achieved by milling away a small part oft he upper layer of acetate.

Other small details that you notice are the integrated rim lock, that is special for ProDesign, and the titanium nosepads that ensures a allergy-friendly frame.

Two feminine shapes in six colors each, one unisex shape in five colors each, two masculine shapes in five colors each and one model in the alumininum and titanium combination comes in three colors.
