Marchon Taps EyeRock Band for Vegas ‘Fun Raiser’

September 3rd, 2010

Marchon is teaming up again with The EyeRock Band to raise funds for the non-profit optical organizations in Las Vegas during Vision Expo West. The annual event, which attracts between 7,000 and 9,000 attendees, will benefit The Guide Dog Foundation and Optometry Giving Sight, and will take place at the twenty-two acre Flamingo Hilton Gardens on Friday October 8th from 9:00 pm to 1:00 am.

“The EyeRock Band,” consisting of musicians from the optical industry appeared at Marchon’s party in 2009, marking the first time the company invited sponsors to participate,” said Donna Rollins, vice president of U.S. sales operations for Marchon. “The industry responded enthusiastically generating $50,000 in contributions. The party was as usual, a really fun evening …it was truly a ‘fun raiser.’”

In addition to “The EyeRock band”, the Marchon party will also feature a laser light show, DJ dancing, and “A Tribute to Neil Diamond” at the Flamingo Pool from 10:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

All attendees and exhibitors at the International Vision Expo West are invited to the admission free party. Guests will receive one complimentary cocktail or two soft drinks. Tickets for additional drinks will be available at $5 each, with all proceeds donated to the two charities. Sponsors of the EyeRock band will receive reserved seating in the VIP section.

Sponsors to date include VSP, VSPOptics, Eyefinity/OfficeMate; Carl Zeiss Vision, Essilor, Ocuco and A&R Optical, according to Rollins, who added that sponsorship opportunities are still available. The Jobson Optical Group is the official media sponsor. Additional information about sponsorship opportunities is available from Carrie Ahrens at Optometry Giving Sight 303-526-0430 or Donna Rollins at Marchon, 631-755-2020 ext. 2371.

Eye Exam Proves Lifesaver for Woman

September 3rd, 2010

Optometrist, Maz Gulamhusein, found a life-threatening condition in Nicki Munro’s eyes during a routine check-up.

A routine eye examination at an Evesham opticians proved to be a lifesaver for Nicki Munro.

Mrs Munro visited Specsavers on Bridge Street for an eye test earlier this month after experiencing some discomfort looking at bright lights at night.

During the check-up, optometrist Maz Gulamhusein found blood vessels showing signs of high pressure and advised her to see a doctor immediately to have her blood pressure checked.

The doctor told the 63-year old from Stanton that her symptoms were potentially fatal as she was at risk of a heart attack or stroke, and prescribed her four sets of medication and regular checkups.

Mrs Munro said: “I’m extremely grateful to Specsavers for spotting the problem and also to my doctor.”

“I had no idea that I could be suffering from something so serious and didn’t realize that a routine eye examination could detect changes in my blood pressure.”

“I’m very lucky that the symptoms were picked up so soon as I could have carried on as normal without realizing and could be in a lot of trouble now.”

Mr Gulamhusein said: “I’m glad that I was able to help and I hope that her story encourages more people to visit the opticians regularly, regardless of whether or not they’re experiencing problems with their vision.”

Mrs Munro’s case highlights how important it is to have regular eye examinations. “We recommend one every two years which should be part of your general health care routine.”

September is Children’s Sports Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month

September 1st, 2010

Every 13 minutes, an emergency room treats a sports-related eye injury. And, 43 percent of sports-related eye injuries are to children ages 14 and younger. Prevent Blindness America has dedicated September as Sports Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month to encourage parents and children to make eye safety part of the game plan.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Ophthalmology issued a joint statement strongly recommending protective eyewear for all those who play sports in which there is a risk for eye injury. And, the American Optometric Association created a resolution to prevent sports-related eye injuries by addressing an individual athlete’s needs, identifying monocular athletes and inform patients of the need for protective eyewear. Prevent Blindness America fully supports these positions and advises that all parents ask their eye care professional what type of eye protection he or she recommends for every sport that their child participates in.

Fortunately, 90 percent of all sports-related eye injuries can be prevented just by wearing the proper eye protection. Lenses should be made of polycarbonate and have an American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) label, indicating they meet the standards of the ASTM for the specific sport. And, polycarbonate eyewear is 10 times more impact resistant than other plastics, according to the National Eye Institute.

“The good news is that sports-related eye injuries are easily preventable just by simply wearing the correct eye protection,” said Hugh R. Parry, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness America. “Unfortunately, only 15 percent of children and 33 percent of adults reported that they consistently do that. We need parents to get in the game of safety and show our kids how important it is to protect our eyes now to help insure a lifetime of healthy vision.”

Eye injuries can include painful corneal abrasions, blunt trauma and penetrating injuries, inflamed iris, fracture of the eye socket, swollen or detached retinas, traumatic cataract and blood spilling into the eye’s anterior chamber. Injuries can range from temporary to permanent vision loss.

Prevent Blindness America offers free information to the public on the best way to prevent eye injuries from sports. The new Prevent Blindness America “Children’s Eye Safety Brochure: A Guide for Parents, Teachers, School Nurses and Coaches” – made possible by a grant from the Transitions® Healthy Sight for Life Fund – provides education on eye injury risk factors, a listing of the recommended types of eye protection for the most popular sports and tips on what to do in case of an eye injury emergency. The new booklet provides information on becoming an advocate for the use of protective eyewear anywhere and anytime sports are played.

Online users can join the Prevent Blindness America Vision Web Forum at preventblindness.org/sportsforum to discuss sports-related eye health and safety topics with other concerned adults. Free fact sheets are also available, including “Recommended Sports Eye Protectors,” and “Tips for Buying Sports Eye Protectors.”
