Two new studies add to the growing evidence that spending time outdoors may help prevent or minimize nearsightedness in children. A study conducted in Taiwan, which is the first to use an educational policy as a public vision health intervention, finds that when children are required to spend recess time outdoors, their risk of nearsightedness is reduced. A separate study in Danish children is the first to show a direct correlation between seasonal fluctuations in daylight, eye growth and the rate of nearsightedness progression. The research was published in the May issue of Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Nearsightedness in childhood is correctable, but is also linked to development of severe forms of this eye disorder in adulthood, which increases risks for potentially blinding diseases such as glaucoma and retinal detachment. Research on nearsightedness, also called myopia, is intensifying as the condition nears epidemic status in Asia and other regions, primarily in developed countries. In the United States nearsightedness has increased by more than 65 percent since 1970[1]. Though myopia is often inherited, researchers are now assessing environmental factors to help explain why myopia rates are rising so rapidly in some populations[2].

In one of the new studies, an elementary school in Taiwan required its 333 students to spend recess outdoors for a year from 2009-10 so that researchers could learn whether this would reduce myopia rates. A similar school nearby served as the control group and did not require outdoor recess. The children in the intervention school, many of whom had formerly spent recess indoors, now spent a total of 80 minutes per day outdoors.

Students at both schools received eye exams at the study outset and one year later. The results showed that significantly fewer children became nearsighted or shifted toward nearsightedness in the school that required outdoor recess, compared with the control school. The researchers recommend that elementary schools in Asia and other regions add frequent recess breaks and other outdoor activities to their daily schedules to help protect children’s eye development and vision.

Pei-Chang Wu, M.D., PhD.

“Because children spend a lot of time in school, a school-based intervention is a direct and practical way to tackle the increasing prevalence of myopia,” said the leader of the study, Pei-Chang Wu, M.D., PhD., of Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

A separate study on the impact of daylight exposure on eye development analyzed data collected in a 2005 clinical trial that included 235 Danish school children with myopia. The participants were divided into seven groups, each of which represented a different seasonal interval. Because daylight hours fluctuate markedly with the seasons in Denmark, from seven hours in winter to nearly 18 in summer, access to daylight was distinct for each group. Axial eye length – the distance from the front to the back of the eye – and vision were tested in each group of children at the beginning and end of their seasonal interval. Axial length is an important measurement because elongation of the eye indicates that the person’s myopia is worsening. In the children with access to the fewest hours of daylight, eye growth averaged 0.19 mm; in those with access to the most daylight, eye growth was just 0.12 mm.

“Our results indicate that exposure to daylight helps protect children from myopia,” said the leader of the study, Dongmei Cui, M.D., Ph.D., of Sun Yat -sen University, China. “This means that parents and others who manage children’s time should encourage them to spend time outdoors daily. When that’s impractical due to weather or other factors, use of daylight-spectrum indoor lights should be considered as a way to minimize myopia.”

Roberto Pineda II, M.D., Director of the Refractive Surgery Service at Mass. Eye and Ear, and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, recently performed the groundbreaking transplant.

Dr. Pineda performed the surgery utilizing donor endothelial tissue that was prepared and pre-loaded into EndoGlide™ (Angiotech Pharmaceuticals, Inc.) cartridges at the Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research (LEITR) in Tampa, FL. Massachusetts Eye and Ear cornea surgeon Kathryn Colby, M.D. has also performed surgeries with the pre-loaded tissue.

According to Dr. Pineda, using preloaded donor tissue may minimize potential damage to the endothelial cells and, thus, may lead to better outcomes for the patient.
The procedure – called Endothelial Keratoplasty – allows surgeons to preserve the majority of a recipient’s cornea while replacing the non-functioning or diseased portion of the cornea with a healthy donor tissue.

Roberto Pineda II, M.D.

“Reducing any variables that could interfere with a patient’s ability to successfully regain sight after surgery is significant,” said Dr. Pineda. “The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for our patients,” Dr. Pineda said.

A world-leading cornea expert and refractive surgeon at Mass. Eye and Ear, Dr. Pineda has collaborated with LEITR and Angiotech/Sharpoint for the last seven months to help develop the innovative procedure.

“I am pleased that – with Dr. Pineda leading these efforts – Mass. Eye and Ear is at the forefront of implementing an innovative technology that could greatly improve the quality of surgical outcomes for patients facing partial or complete vision loss,” said Joan W. Miller, M.D., FARVO, Chief and Chair of Ophthalmology at Mass. Eye and Ear and Harvard Medical School.

Last year, LEITR reported that eye banks are able to safely prepare and load corneal tissue into the EndoGlide™ cartridges. In a pre-clinical study presented at the 2012 Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) Annual Meeting, corneal buttons pre-loaded by LEITR sustained an average of 9.07% endothelial cell damage, compared to 36.2% endothelial cell damage in control group tissue that was loaded into the insertion system on site. The difference in endothelial damage between the preloaded and control buttons was statistically significant (P = 0.004).

A large-scale National Eye Institute study has shown fish oil supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids do not alter the progression of age-related macular degeneration, says a national team of researchers including David M. Brown, M.D., an retina specialist at The Methodist Hospital who ran Houston’s part of the study.

Another key finding of the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2, or AREDS 2, is that lutein and zeaxanthin may be safer than beta-carotene in reducing risk of disease progression.

A retina with age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, converting from the dry form of the disease (yellow mottling) to the wet form (red spots). Image by Eric Kegley.

“If you look at all the analysis performed in the AREDS 2 study, it looks like lutein taken with zeaxanthin is at least as effective and may be better than beta-carotene,” Brown said. “If you also consider that beta-carotene was associated with increased lung cancer rates in all former smokers, I no longer recommend any formulations containing beta-carotene.”

Researchers saw a modest decrease in the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) among those who took high amounts of zinc, but that result was not statistically significant.

“Millions of older Americans take nutritional supplements to protect their sight without clear guidance regarding benefit and risk,” said NEI director Paul A. Sieving, M.D., Ph.D. “This study clarifies the role of supplements in helping prevent advanced AMD, an incurable, common, and devastating disease that robs older people of their sight and independence.”

Like beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin can be converted to vitamin A in humans and can collect at the retina, where they probably limit chemical damage caused by light. Lutein is found in foods like egg yolk and animal fat deposits. Zeaxanthin is found in some berries, corn, and paprika.

AREDS 2′s results agree with past studies that have shown an association between beta-carotene consumption and the development of lung cancer in current or former smokers. About half of AREDS 2 participants reported having been smokers at some point in their lives.

David M. Brown, M.D.

Macular degeneration is a disease in which retina damage causes a loss of visual acuity in the center of the eye, called the macula. AMD is a major cause of blindness in the elderly, and currently affects about 11 million Americans. National Eye Institute experts believe that number will double by 2050.

About 12 years ago, the National Eye Institute began funding studies to look at how diet and dietary supplements affect the progression of the disease. AREDS showed a 25 percent decreased risk of AMD when study participants took vitamin C, beta-carotene (a precursor to vitamin A), vitamin E, zinc, and copper (called the AREDS Formulation).

The five-year AREDS 2, which began in 2006, was a national study of more than 4,200 people. It suggests fish oil supplements probably do not need to be added to the formulation, and that lutein with zeaxanthin might replace beta-carotene in the AREDS Formulation, since lutein is not associated with increased risk for lung cancer.

“The first AREDS study showed us that vitamins really make a difference in decreasing the complications of AMD,” Brown said. “Now with the AREDS 2, we have solid data on what to recommend to our patients. Based on the AREDS 2 data, I now recommend that my patients no longer take beta-carotene but look for a vitamin with 10 mg Lutein, 2 mg zeaxanthin, 80mg zinc, 2mg copper, 500mg vitamin C, and 400 IU vitamin E.”

AREDS 2 was chaired by Frederick L. Ferris III, M.D., director of the Division of Epidemiology and Clinical Applications at NEI.

Voted #1 for kids brands*, ClearVision Optical offers the widest range of kids’ brands available from one company.

In 2013, the ClearVision Kids Collection offers 40+ designs, including more tween styles than ever, meeting every eyewear need for kids from 0-16. The collection now includes edgier designs in plastics and flat metal, and more color infused and architectural styles to reflect more adult styling. Inspired by current trends in kids and tween clothing and sneakers, the collection will please even your most fashionable young patients!

After surveying its customers and a marketplace evaluation, ClearVision expanded its kid’s collections to include frames appropriate for the teen and tween marketplace. Adding more mature styles into its Op kids, Jessica McClintock for Girls and IZOD Boys collections gives ECP’s a wider scope of frames for its customers! Also included in this year’s program is Op, the popular surfer brand, and Junction City, ClearVision’s fashion-value private label brand.

Following is a look into the all inclusive ClearVision Kids collection:

Dilli Dalli (newborn–3): Driven by the needs of our littlest customers, their parents, and eye care professionals, the Dilli Dalli eyewear collection represents ClearVision’s dedication to the pediatric eyewear market. The 6 designs address proper, precise fit in terms of the nose pads, end pieces, bridge, temple curve and temple lengths. Dilli Dalli’s IntelliFlex™ multi-action spring hinge is designed with the ability to flex both vertically and horizontally, offering unique flexibility and greater durability to the Dilli Dalli frames.

Jessica McClintock Girls (ages 3–12): The Jessica McClintock Eyewear for Girls Collection offers feminine designs in soft colorations for young girls with a twist of attitude. The new release picks up where Dilli Dalli leaves off offering adorably cute to pretty frames for toddlers transitioning into preschoolers, and beyond. Expect to see cool butterfly shapes, bilaminate and trilaminate finishes, and mosaic-like temple designs in flat metals, acetate, and metal combo styles.

Op Kids (ages 6–14): The Op eyewear collection offers a fresh selection of cool shapes and modern styles splashed with a beach-and-board short vibe for kids and tweens ages 6–14. The latest release translates the brand’s sporty, surf-and-skate attitude into colorful, highly patterned designs – 6 for girls, 5 for boys – all inspired by today’s fashion trends. The collection’s nod to modern teen-to-adult styling appeals to today’s kids and tweens who want to look more grown up!

Op (ages 14-16): Op eyewear includes new teen styles for the 14-16 eyewear enthusiast! The collection’s hip, wavelike piercings and beachwear-inspired patterns light up youthful faces with colorful fades, colorblocking accents, and juicy translucents, in both acetate and metal.

IZOD Boys (ages 6–14): The IZOD Boys collection offers fashion forward eyewear for kids and tweens ages 6 to 14, featuring sport-infused, and all American-designs. The latest release emulates the style direction of the IZOD men’s collection taking youthful spin with a fresh pop of color and on-trend retro eye shapes. Memory metal bridges and rubberized temples provide durability and comfort. It’s a perfect lifestyle fit for today’s young IZOD customer.

Junction City (ages 14–16): Designed for teen go-getters who aren’t afraid to push the style envelope with their specs, Junction City’s designs pack a lot of punch into this private label collection. For teen girls, apparel-inspired piercings, funky temples, vivid, colorful patterns and youthful front shapes let them put their best face forward. For teen boys, minimalist, clean looks such as semi rimless frames in earth tone colorations are taken to a new dimension through architectural – to industrial-inspired temple piercings.

The Tommy Hilfiger Group, which is wholly owned by PVH Corp., is pleased to announce the launch of the men’s and women’s Surf Shack eyewear collection. The new eyewear styles are part of the Summer 2013 Surf Shack collection, a limited-edition capsule collection of apparel and accessories designed to celebrate the après-surf lifestyle. Amongst the eyewear collection’s statement pieces are a selection of bright, bold and versatile sunglasses that capture a relaxed surfing vibe and Tommy Hilfiger’s signature classic, American, cool aesthetic.

“It’s the surf culture’s easy, laid-back spirit that I find so inspiring,” said Tommy Hilfiger. “The Surf Shack collection infuses quintessential surf statement pieces with modern accents. The men’s and women’s eyewear styles truly embrace the surf lifestyle, incorporating bold colors and graphic prints into classic frames.”

Surf Shack sunglasses for women include neon pilot styles, butterfly-shaped frames and 80s-inspired square frames. Colors range from neutral grey and sky blue to fluorescent coral and pink. For men, square styles are in abundance, with plenty of wooden effect temples. Stripes in navy blue, lemon yellow and clementine add colorful pops. The spirit of the collection is further expressed in a number of unisex styles featuring vivid hues, classic lines and a preppy attitude.

In addition to eyewear, the Surf Shack collection includes beach-ready apparel, footwear, watches and bags. In support of Tommy Hilfiger’s ongoing partnership with the Art Production Fund, the limited-edition collection is complemented by a series of unique surfboards, custom designed by five American artists: Lola Schnabel, Richard Phillips, Scott Campbell, Gary Simmons and Raymond Pettibon. The capsule collection and surfboards will be available in Europe, North America (including Macy’s), Asia, Latin America, and on Tommy.com.

As it does every year, June marks the arrival of National Safety Month, a four-week awareness and education campaign of the National Safety Council designed to promote and encourage safety and injury prevention at work and at home. And once again, vision protection innovator Wiley X, Inc. will be helping to spread the message and supporting the goals of this worthy program —educating the public on key ways to prevent accidental injuries and death.

The theme for this year’s program is “Safety Starts With Me,” a message that perfectly parallels Wiley X’s stance on the need for protective eyewear not just some of the time, but all of the time. “The best protective eyewear in the world can’t help prevent injury if it isn’t being worn at the time of an accident,” said Wiley X Co-Owner Myles Freeman, Jr. “We’ve made great strides in developing protective sunglasses that are stylish and comfortable enough for every situation, whether it’s on the jobsite or while engaged in outdoor activities like mountain biking, fishing or motorcycling. Still, at the end of the day, each person has to make a personal decision to wear vision protection. This is precisely why educational programs like National Safety Month are so important,” added Freeman.

Wiley X has witnessed an increased focus on eye protection from America’s refineries, factories and plants, with increased emphasis on premium protection versus cost. “Saving money is always important, but more employers are recognizing the longterm benefits of providing workers with a better quality product. There are clear differences between premium protective eyewear and the cheap, disposable options out there. Quality, comfort and utility can make the difference between whether a worker wears his protective eyewear, or not,” said Freeman.

Wiley X has built its reputation on protecting America’s vision in the toughest environments on Earth. Wiley X is a leading provider of vision protection systems for law enforcement and the U.S. military. Wiley X’s Safety Series glasses are ideal for on-the-job protection indoors and out. One example is the company’s many innovative Climate Control™ models featuring a patented removable, soft-foam Facial Cavity™ Seal that blocks out wind, debris and reflected light for complete protection and job concentration. Almost all Wiley X models are also prescription ready, providing a comfortable, no-compromise solution for wearers who need both state-of-the-art protection and corrective lenses.

Every pair of Wiley X sunglasses meets stringent ANSI Z87.1 High Velocity and High Mass Impact Safety ratings, providing occupational grade protection for all wearers and a wide range of activities. Wiley X is the only premium sunglass brand with this level of vision protection in every pair of glasses it makes. Selected Wiley X models also meet the updated MIL-PRF-32432 (GL) MCEP Standard (superseding the GL-PD 10-12 MCEP Standard) for combat protective eyewear.

Renoir and his fellow Impressionists saw great potential in the bold use of color as a tool of personal and naturalistic expression. Among the strongest pigments in the Impressionist arsenal, pure royal blue has been used since the early 19th century to add a splash of luxurious color, evoking a feeling of adventurous style. This vibrant hue makes its presence known in a large variety of Ogi styles, most brilliantly demonstrated with the 4800, the 7148, the 9200, and the 9076. Each frame emulates an artistic sophistication and has a fashionable flair that personifies Ogi Eyewear. Bright cobalt, metallic azure, and sky blue hues blend with multifaceted tortoise color combinations to present each style with brilliant coloring and an individualized expression.

4800
Designed with the most impeccable comfort and elegance, Ogi Eyewear debuts the 4800. This futuristic style introduces the Evo-Tec collection, a revolutionary line of eyewear with a valiant persona. Blending modern design with classic sophistication, the 4800 emulates the lightweight quality of titanium while offering its own unique individuality.

OGI Eyewear’s 7148 debuts with a smoothly carved bridge and a color infused camouflage color palette. Offered in green, blue, brown, or red, the 7148’s matte translucent front bonds beautifully with boldly colored camouflage temples. A slight cat eye silhouette gives the 7148 a feminine sophistication with a vibrant attitude.

Saturated with exciting colors, OGI Eyewear releases the fun loving 9076. A tortoiseshell pattern blends with hues such as lemon, lime, raspberry, and blueberry to introduce this fresh style. This elongated oval shape cast in premium acetate offers a solid color interior to satisfy anyone’s color preferences to exude a bold persona.

The 9200 makes a bold entrance into OGI Eyewear’s collection of combination frames with a vibrant color palette. Hues of rich violet, cobalt blue, deep brown, or fiery red envelop the marbled acetate and color saturated metal eye wire of the 9200. Accompanied by an arched brow, the adjustable nose pads of the 9200 offer customizable comfort while never sacrificing flavorful fashion.

“Summer has arrived, and with it, a renewed interest in bright color accents for personalized fashion expression. Conveying a sense of richness and superiority, this bold and lustrous shade of blue has stolen the show this season, as it exudes an aura of importance and confidence for both men and women. Through the exciting and innovative use of coloration, Ogi consistently satisfies this desire as each style exudes sophisticated style with an extra pop of bold color. ” – Karly Anderson, Marketing and Design

Tura, Inc., the inventor of fashion eyewear and industry trendsetter for the past 75 years, is excited to announce new styles for its popular crush and oio brands, which are being promoted in the month of June with an attractive back-to-school offer.

Oio eyewear is known for its stylish shapes that are playful, colorful and textured. The brand focuses on adventurous kids and tweens who want to emulate their older siblings, but also wish to express their individuality. The two new oio designs capitalize on the popular vintage and color-blocking trends this year. Each acetate style is retro-inspired with a fun pop of color at the temples. Fully equipped with spring hinges, these styles are ideal for kids on the go!

The crush consumer leads an active “extreme sports” and techie lifestyle, but also follows the hottest fashion trends. The latest crush eyewear designs include the introduction of non-memory metal styles into the collection, and also retro-inspired frames with a modern twist.

Just in time for summer, MYKITA has partnered up with French accessories brand Côte&Ciel, known for their iconic designs for people on the move, to create a distinctive collection of protective eyewear pouches.

Slipped into a pocket or bag, frames will not only be easily accessible but also travelling in style, no matter if it’s to the beach, the forest or a picnic.

The pouches are made from Côte&Ciel’s signature diamond grip mesh neoprene. Durable and sleek they are a practical solution to keep your beloved frames protected and always at hand. The inverted zip and safety lip prevents scratching your eyewear. And, to make it even better – an integrated microfiber cleaning cloth allows you to keep your lenses smudge free while removing the inconvenience of looking for or even losing that rather invaluable piece of fabric.

The new styles capture the fun lifestyle of today’s CANDIE’S girl combined with pops of color, stone accents and an eclectic mix of design elements.

This season, tortoise is presented in an assortment of bold interpretations, including model C Opaline, a handcrafted acetate style complimented by contrasting colors on the inside of the frame. Model C Onix features a modified rectangle metal front in a satin finish combined with acetate temples in tortoise variations. A secondary color is revealed on the inside of this style’s temple, as well.

Models COS Carina and COS Ellie both feature metal aviator front shapes in a variety of matte finished colorations, including matte gold, matte gunmetal, matte silver and matte white.
SPY is happily introducing the “greenest” sunglass frame ever made—the SPY + Surfrider Foundation Helm—as a part of its new eco-friendly Recompose Collection.

With a shared passion for surfing and the common goal of environmental awareness, the SPY + Surfrider partnership aims to highlight Surfrider Foundation’s Rise Above Plastics campaign while advancing the development of environmentally conscious eyewear built from sustainable sources.

“SPY’s longstanding relationship with Surfrider Foundation made them an easy choice to collaborate with on our launch of the most environmentally responsible sunglass frame ever made,” says Michael Marckx, SPY President/CEO and Surfrider board member. “As an active member of the Surfrider Foundation for the last 20 years, I’ve seen the tremendous good the Foundation has achieved with over 225 successful campaigns, including the ongoing Save Trestles initiative. Now, the Rise Above Plastics campaign is more crucial than ever and we have to do our part as lovers of the oceans, beaches and waves.”

With both frame and hinges made from 100% biodegradable Plantate™, an all-natural plant polysaccharide material, the SPY + Surfrider Foundation Helm is a breakthrough in environmentally mindful eyewear. Even the recycled packaging, organic cotton protective baggie, soy inks and cleaning cloth are all part of the ethos built into SPY’s new eco-friendly Recompose Collection—which launched with this first partnership between SPY and Surfrider Foundation on Earth Day, April 22, 2013.

Purchasers of this biodegradable sunglass frame from SPY will be happily supporting the goals of the Surfrider Foundation, as $5 from each pair sold will go to aid their mission of protecting oceans, waves, and beaches. MSRP for the SPY + Surfrider Foundation Helm is $110 and can be found at a local retailer near you.

Alexander McQueen launches its latest range of sunglasses and optical frames. The 2013 eyewear collection features the house’s iconic signature details such as the three dimensional metal skull and the studs. The collection also includes new styles inspired by the brand’s new Heroine bag. The range has a contemporary, sophisticated style and showcases advanced manufacturing techniques, exclusives materials and unique colourways.

These large, round or square shaped acetate sunglasses feature a unique design. This design is reminiscent of the Maison’s new Heroine bag – translated here in a curved metal insert on the double-hinged temples – combining both aesthetics and functionality. Classic and elegant, the colour palette encompasses tones of coral, Havana, blue, black, shaded blue, shaded orange, and pearled beige.

These sophisticated sunglasses are adorned with the brand’s iconic studs, framing the front part of the frame and on the temples. The color palette includes soft nuances of white, blue, burgundy, Havana and black.

The avant-garde design of these metal and acetate sunglasses is inspired by the ’80s, with their bold, strong lines decorated with the brand’s iconic skull. Sophisticated colour combinations of gold with black or Havana have been selected for this model with shaded lenses.

In an effort to raise awareness about the importance of healthy vision and its connection to success both on the field and in the classroom, Transitions Optical, Inc. teamed up with MLB Hall of Famer and baseball legend Cal Ripken, Jr. and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation to bring free eyecare services and a baseball clinic to more than 100 children in-need at the Sulphur Springs Boys & Girls Club in Tampa, Fla.

This event, held May 13-15, marks the first of several events in which Transitions Optical, Cal Ripken, Jr. and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation will join forces to bring these services to underserved children across the country.

Children from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay benefited from Transitions Optical and its industry partner VSP® Vision Care bringing 40-foot long mobile eyecare clinic “Eyenstein” to the Club, onboard which the children received comprehensive eye exams conducted by local VSP optometrists, and if prescription eyeglasses were required, they chose a brand new pair of eyeglass frames fitted with Transitions® adaptive lenses™.

Following their eye exams, the children had the opportunity to participate in a baseball clinic with multiple skills stations, led by Ripken – a Transitions lens wearer – to demonstrate how healthy, enhanced vision impacts performance on the field. Ripken, who is currently serving as a brand ambassador for Transitions Optical’s “Official Sponsor of Sightseeing™” program, will appear at other community events alongside Transitions Optical this year to help spread the message about the importance of taking care of your eyes and the positive impact that can make in everyday life.

“Research shows that one in four children has an undetected vision problem that can interfere with the ability to read and learn,” said Brian Hauser, general manager, U.S. and Canada, Transitions Optical. “It is one of Transitions Optical’s central missions to reduce this statistic. And we are honored that Cal Ripken, Jr. is joining us in this endeavor to make a positive impact here in the Tampa community, and in other cities across the country.”

“Having good eyesight has had a significant impact on my career and in my personal life,” said Cal Ripken, Jr. “It really struck me knowing how many of our youth have vision-related issues and are unaware. The partnership with Transitions is a tremendous opportunity to work together to reach hundreds in need and educate families everywhere about the importance of eye exams and proper eyewear.”

In addition to the eye exams and baseball clinic, the children also received free, brand new books from Transitions Optical’s partner, Bess the Book Bus, a mobile literacy outreach organization which travels to underserved schools and community centers nationwide distributing books and encouraging children to develop a lifelong love of reading. One of the many books handed out at Sulphur Springs, entitled Hothead, was co-written by Cal Ripken, Jr. as part of “Cal Ripken, Jr. ‘s All-Stars” series, which focuses on teaching life lessons to children through stories about sports.

“Those of us at the Sulphur Springs Boys & Girls Club are so grateful that Transitions Optical, Cal Ripken, Jr. and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation have brought these services to us today,” said Britney Wright, club director, Sulphur Springs Boys & Girls Club. “Many of these children have never had an eye exam before and did not realize they had a vision problem – and seeing clearly now will make a significant impact in their ability to read, learn and play their favorite sports – especially baseball. It’s so rewarding to see the joy in their faces when they put on their glasses and can see things so clearly.”

The children also learned more about eye health through lesson plans provided by Transitions Optical as part of its Eye Didn’t Know That!® program, which serves as a resource for parents, teachers and students to understand the importance of regular, comprehensive eye exams and taking care of your eyes.

Credit the modern retro styling, the continued popularity of Geek Chic, or the huge female fan base of the American Idol finalist, but the collection has a strong unisex appeal. ‘We found that a significant percentage of sales could be attributed to women,’ says Match Eyewear President Ethan Goodman. ‘Incorporating women’s styles into the collection is a vital step in the natural progression of the brand.’

Echoes of menswear inspiration are refined with delicate proportions, unexpected colors and thoughtful detailing for a distinctly feminine charm that takes Geek Chic to the next level. The new women’s models reflect an effortless cool that speaks directly to the classic, genuine and individual style of the Danny Gokey brand, targeted to men and women, ages 18 to 35.
