Essilor’s Airwear “Breit Eyes” Facebook Photo Contest Grand Prize Winner

March 12th, 2012

Jack Zeblisky with his original, autographed sketch by Mary Engelbreit

Airwear®, Essilor’s lighter, safer and greener brand of polycarbonate lenses, and iconic artist and healthy vision advocate Mary Engelbreit presented Michele Zeblisky of Northwood, N.H., grand prize winner of the “Breit Eyes” Facebook photo contest, with an original, autographed sketch in the likeness of her 11-year-old son, Jack, as well as a tour of Engelbreit’s St. Louis studio and a $200 general use gift card.

Fans of Airwear Lenses on Facebook may recall Essilor and Engelbreit asked parents to visit the page to enter the “Breit Eyes” contest last September. By submitting a photo of their child being “lighter, safer or greener” – the key benefits of Airwear lenses – while wearing glasses, parents had a chance to win one-of-a-kind prizes from Engelbreit. One lucky grand prize winner, Zeblisky, received an original sketch by Engelbreit in the likeness of the child in the winning photo plus a trip to tour Engelbreit’s St. Louis studio and a $200 gift card. One runner up, Anna Caudill of Franklin, Tenn., received a collection of Ann Estelle children’s books authored and signed by Engelbreit.

Like her most beloved and bespectacled character, Ann Estelle, Engelbreit herself got glasses as a young girl and attributes her beginning in art to being able to see details of the world around her clearly for the first time. Engelbreit, who is now presbyopic, is an advocate for healthy vision and yearly eye exams.

“It was a pleasure to meet the Zeblisky family and present them with their very own original sketch of a bespectacled young Jack,” said Engelbreit. “The “Breit Eyes” contest has enabled me to combine my two greatest passions – advocacy for healthy vision and art – and I’ve truly enjoyed working with Airwear as they continue their efforts to promote seeing the world more clearly through a lens that is lighter, safer and greener.”

“Essilor is pleased to have a partner in Mary Engelbreit, an iconic and admired artist, through her support for Airwear lenses and participation in the “Breit Eyes” contest,” said Carl Bracy, senior vice president of marketing and new business, Essilor of America. “We look forward to continuing this relationship in the future.”

Airwear lenses are thinner, lighter and more impact-resistant than standard plastic lenses while providing 100 percent UV protection. “Eyewear is a key piece of Nike’s incredible repertoire of equipment to help athletes perform their best,” said Steve Tripi, marketing manager – global, Nike Vision and Marchon Eyewear. “With Transitions Optical’s advanced photochromic lens technology and Nike Vision’s patented Nike MAX Optics, patented engineered tints – such as Max Golf Tint and Max Outdoor Tint – these are the new must-haves for anyone wanting to see sport better, without having to think about it.”

Color Science

It can seem cosmetic, but color is actually one of the most important considerations in the function of a lens. In different lighting situations, certain colors enhance vision better than others. Nike MAX Transitions sunglasses feature two patented tints, engineered precisely to enhance the visual details of the natural environment encountered during specific sports and activities.

  • Nike MAX Transitions/Golf Tint – a violet color designed to improve contour recognition on the greens and increase ball pop.
  • Nike MAX Transitions/Outdoor Tint – a green color that brightens the shadows, increases contrast and enhances the visual spectrum in natural environments – like hiking and trails.

Innovation In Lens Technology

Transitions Optical has a 20+ year history of innovation in photochromic lens technology. Industry pioneers in the development of adaptive eyewear; they were the first to engineer adaptive sun lenses for specific sports and activities. Adaptive lenses are a must-have for athletes in outdoor sports and activities. The smallest variation in lighting can affect vision and impact performance. With Nike MAX Transitions sunglasses, wearers will have optimal vision at all times – regardless of the lighting conditions – cloudy, sunny, early morning, high noon – or in between.

Innovation In Fit

Nike MAX Transitions sunglasses are available in several popular Nike styles:

  • The Show X2 style is designed to deliver grip, stability and comfort. They feature adjustable temples and an adjustable ventilated nose for stability. They offer reduced fogging and are ideal for baseball and training, golf, tennis and cycling.
  • The SQ frames are inspired by the design of the Nike SQ golf clubs. They provide wide coverage with minimal visual interference and are ideal for golf and training.

The Nike MAX Transitions lens, available through all Nike retail locations in March, will also be offered as an accessory lens for the Skylon Ace, Skylon Ace Pro and Show X2 Pro. All of the Nike Transitions lenses are polycarbonate material and, like all Nike and Transitions lenses, block 100 percent of UV rays.

Seiko Optical Extends Its Free-Form Product Offering With New SEIKO Surmount Ws

December 15th, 2011

Seiko Optical Products of America, the pioneer and global leader in digital ophthalmic lens technology, extends its free-form product offering with new SEIKO Surmount Ws (Wide & Short), 100% internal free-form progressive lenses.

Mike Rybacki, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing stated, “SEIKO Surmount Wide & Short is a new addition to our vast free-form product line, the most advanced in the U.S. market, and the first to incorporate recently patented technology in internal free-form design. This new technology places a complex convex surface onto the concave side of the lens. This lets us use lower base curves than ever before, creating much flatter, more cosmetically appealing lenses.”

New SEIKO Surmount Ws is a hard design progressive lens offering a 42% wider reading area with clear distance vision to the periphery. Mr. Rybacki continued, “Progressive lens wearers who rely heavily on their eyewear for near vision tasks will find SEIKO Surmount Ws lenses easy to wear and use. This advanced design features an automatic variable inset of the corridor and reading areas based on patient distance Rx and PD. ECP’s can also specify the patient’s preferred reading distance to ensure exact optical alignment for the widest intermediate and reading areas possible. Surmount lenses also use advanced aspheric compensation to optimize the Rx for the as-worn position, and multi-polar astigmatic correction that corrects for oblique astigmatism, increasing wearer comfort by reducing the need for head movements.”

Mr. Rybacki concluded, “Seiko Surmount and Surmount Ws lenses are available in 1.50 plastic, Trivex®, polycarbonate, 1.60, 1.67, and 1.74 high index materials. Polarized and Transitions® lenses are also available in select materials.

For complete information on all of Seiko’s lens products, please visit our website at www.seikoeyewear.com or call Seiko Optical Products of America, Inc. at 1-800-235-5367.”

December 7th, 2011

Seiko Optical Products, the global leader in digital ophthalmic lens technology, announces their Surmount Internal Free-Form lens is now available in 1.50 plastic and 1.59 polycarbonate materials.

Mike Rybacki, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing stated, “Seiko Surmount is the first lens in the U.S. market to incorporate recently patented advancements in internal free-form design (No. 7,341,344). This new technology allows the lab to process convex curves on the concave side of the lens, which means that Surmount lenses can be produced on lower base curves than traditional back-surface free-form designs, resulting in much flatter, more cosmetically appealing lenses, especially in high Plus Rx’s. Surmount lenses are currently available from select independent optical laboratories in Trivex, as well as in 1.60, 1.67 and 1.74 materials. Tool Educates Employees on Their Risk for Vision-Related Issues

August 4th, 2011

Encouraging employees to take advantage of their vision benefit to promote eye health and optimal sight, Transitions Optical, Inc. has introduced an individual version of the Healthy Sight Calculator. The free, online tool allows users to calculate their risk for eye-related diseases and vision problems, and how much they could save – in time, money and sight – with the right vision care and vision wear through their vision benefit. Results vary based on the user’s age, gender and ethnicity, all of which impact risk for vision problems and health issues that can affect the eyes. The new tool can be used by employers to educate their workforce, or accessed directly by consumers at HealthySightCalculator.org.

“Most consumers miss the full picture of what the benefit can do for them – regular eye exams for early detection of eye and overall health problems, an up-to-date prescription to maintain productivity day-to-day, and eyewear features like UV and glare protection to preserve and enhance vision,” said Pat Huot, director of managed vision care, Transitions Optical. “The calculator helps tell the story of what you could be missing if you don’t care for your sight. It’s a powerful way to motivate more people to use their vision benefit and get the care they need.”

Transitions Optical developed the Healthy Sight Calculator with a team of experts through its Healthy Sight Working for You initiative, which aims to raise awareness about the value of eye care and eyewear available through a vision benefit. Contributors to the Healthy Sight Calculator include Kovin Naidoo, O.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., International Centre for Eyecare Education; Robert Pariseau, CLU, CEBS, Benefits Solutions Group; and Vincent Young, M.D., chairman, Division of Ophthalmology at Albert Einstein Medical Center.

How It Works

The Healthy Sight Calculator takes visitors along a path, helping them understand their individual risk and potential savings, while providing education along the way. Visitors to the calculator can watch a video setting up the importance of caring for their vision, or can skip immediately to entering their demographic information, including age, gender and ethnicity. With each selection, the calculator provides details on how their demographics impact their risk. Users are also asked to enter whether they have health insurance, because the calculator considers this when determining how much the individual could pay out-of-pocket in medical costs for different eye- and overall-health issues.

The calculator then provides an overview of the user’s risk for 11 vision-related issues in
three categories, showing where the user is at higher risk than the national average. Issues
covered include:

  • Vision Problems (Trouble Seeing Up-Close, Trouble Seeing Far Away, Eyestrain
and Fatigue, Severe Headaches From Light and Glare)
  • Eye Diseases (Cataracts, Diabetic Retinopathy, Elevated Intraocular Pressure, Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration)
  • Overall Health (Pre-diabetes, Undiagnosed High Blood Pressure)

Sections specific to vision problems, eye disease and overall health delve more deeply into risk rates and associated costs – in time and money – that could be avoided for different issues with earlier and proper care. Users can click on each vision issue for more information, including helpful videos narrated by Dr. Young and interactive “vision loss” simulations that show what they would miss seeing if facing that issue.

The Healthy Sight Calculator then provides a summary of individual results, and offers a customized recommendation for next steps based on each person’s results. The summary can be printed out and shared with that person’s eyecare professional. While some recommendations are specific to certain conditions, all users are encouraged to find out what’s covered by their vision plan and to visit their eyecare professional. The calculator indicates that plans should include comprehensive, yearly eye exams and coverage of or discounts on lens enhancements (like photochromic Transitions® lenses and anti-reflective coatings) to enhance and protect vision.

“The vision wear side of the vision benefit is often underestimated in terms of what it can do for an individual from a savings perspective,” said Huot. “For example, research shows that employees could save as much as 15 minutes per day by avoiding eye focusing problems. The calculator shares what savings would be possible if you could gain back this time simply by wearing the right eyewear to reduce eyestrain and fatigue.”

The individual version of the Healthy Sight Calculator complements a version for HR professionals that assesses savings and return-on-investment possible for an entire workforce through a premium vision benefit. The HR professional version of the calculator can be found at HealthySightWorkingForYou.org/calculator.

Transitions Optical Joins IndyCar Sponsor Lineup

June 28th, 2011

Transitions Optical, Inc. announced its new IndyCar sponsorship of Penske Racing’s Ryan Briscoe. Team Penske’s #6 car was shown in its new livery for the first time at the June 19th Milwaukee Mile 225.

“Our adaptive lens technology is a perfect match for the changing light conditions drivers – and fans – experience during an IndyCar race,” said Brian Hauser, general manager, U.S. and Canada, Transitions Optical. “With margins of victory in the tenths of a second, sharp, clear vision can be the difference between a win and second place.”

Transitions Optical is the worldwide leader in photochromic technology, developing products which automatically adapt level of darkness as light changes, providing visual comfort and UV protection in all light conditions. The company offers a family of products, including everyday prescription lenses which are designed to be worn indoors and darken outdoors, and prescription and non-prescription performance sun lenses and face shields for outdoor activities.

On the racetrack, the Penske team is currently testing Transitions® SOLFX™ face shields – non-prescription shields that use advanced photochromic technology which automatically shifts in changing light conditions to provide drivers comfort and enhanced visual performance.

Off the track, Ryan Briscoe is wearing Transitions® XTRActive™ lenses, everyday prescription lenses which change from a comfortable tint indoors to very dark outdoors, and darken moderately behind the windshield of a car. Briscoe is also wearing Drivewear® Transitions® SOLFX™ sun lenses, designed specifically to enhance visual performance while driving. These lenses change color and degree of darkness behind the windshield to improve contrast and comfort, reduce glare and excess visible light, and optimize the driving experience.

“Already, I’ve noticed a difference in the quality of my vision when wearing the Transitions SOLFX face shield,” said Helio Castroneves. “The automatically-adjusting shield literally does the work for my eyes – making it easier for me to concentrate on other aspects of my race. It’s such innovative technology that I’m excited to be wearing Drivewear® Transitions® SOLFX™ sun lenses off the track as well.”

“We’ve already successfully shown how photochromic technology can be applied to sports like golf and cycling,” added Hauser, referencing the company’s title sponsorship of the Transitions Championship®, an official PGA TOUR® event and sponsorship of Team Garmin-Cervélo, a professional cycling team. “Improved visual performance can help provide an edge in personal performance.”

Dr. Larry Lampert, sports vision expert and optometric consultant to Transitions Optical, has worked extensively with professional athletes from the PGA TOUR, the LPGA, NFL and MLB. “I can tell you that understanding the connection between vision and sports can positively impact your skills and greatly help improve your game,” he said. “Thinking about your eyes is especially important when participating in outdoor activities and sports. Adaptive lenses that adjust to changing light conditions outdoors while blocking 100 percent of harmful UV rays help protect the health of your eyes for a lifetime.”

Following the June 19th Milwaukee Mile 225, Transitions Optical’s newest sponsorship has generated coverage within high-profile online and print consumer auto racing media outlets, including WhoWon.com, Auto Racing Daily, AutoRacing1.com and Motorsport.com.
